How I Built My Soundproof Drum Studio – Room-Within-a-Room Garage Conversion (Pt. 1)

This article walks through the first phase of my soundproof drum studio build — turning an empty detached Nordic garage into a sound isolated recording space / drum room using a room-within-a-room construction.

If you're planning to build a soundproof studio — or you're just curious how a normal suburban garage can be turned into a sound isolated drum room — this walkthrough gives you a clear, real-world example of what a build like this looks like when it’s done right. This behind-the-scenes look will help you understand the main steps, early decisions, demolition work, moisture control choices, HVAC planning, and the foundational steps required before and after framing the inner room.

Starting From an Empty Detached Garage

When I began, the garage was completely empty — a half-warm Nordic garage with old plasterboard walls with cracks, aging windows, and no soundproofing. The very first steps included:

  • Removing the interior plasterboards from walls and ceilings
  • Planning structural preparations for the outer shell
  • Preparing to remove and close the garage door
  • Evaluating which original windows to replace or remove

The goal from the start was to create a structure capable of containing real metal drumming and double bass — in a suburban neighborhood — so all parties and conveniently continue live in harmony.

🎬 Soundproof Build Walkthrough Pt. 1

Below is the full Build Pt.1 episode, which takes you on a walk through of the soundproof studio room wihthin a room build construction.

Early Planning, Permits & Professional Reviews

Even though I approached this as a DIY-hybrid project, I needed to consult:

  • A structural engineer
  • A construction supervisor
  • An HVAC designer
  • Studio designers and acousticians

These ensured the project would be safe, code-compliant, and actually capable of reaching the level of isolation needed for drums.

Demolition, Insulation & Preparing the Shell

Once demolition began, the transformation moved on to:

  • Ceiling and wall boards removed
  • Upgrade of the vapor barrier and insulation to work for the new room within a room structure
  • Old windows removed and temporary gypsum closures installed
  • HVAC design and routing locked in
  • Locking in the design and building the air ventilation baffle box silencers

At this stage, the “blank canvas” started taking shape — and became ready for the main part: the room within a room build.

Beginning the Room-Within-a-Room Structure

We then began constructing the decoupled inner room:

  • Floating, isolated framing with air gaps
  • Framing capable to handle multilayer heavy mass drywall installation
  • Resilient channels on the ceiling
  • Strategic staggering of seams to avoid sound leakage

Every step was done cautiously — because once structure and solutions have been decided, and sealed, there was no going back. Small decisions here can affect the final isolation efficieny and success level of the whole project.

Bringing the Space to Life

As the inner shell took form:

  • HVAC system was installed
  • Mini-split heat pump installed
  • Bathroom floor installed before installing air ventilation soundproof baffle boxes
  • Drywall sealing, mudding and sanding
  • Installing air ventilation baffle box (sound maze) silencers

Finally — paint went on the walls and ceiling, which made the entire room look and feel like a real studio.

What Comes Next (Build Pt. 2)

In Part 2 of the build series, we move into:

  • Interior finishing
  • Electrical installation
  • Acoustic treatment planning & DIY builds
  • Entrance completion
  • Studio setup and drum room configuration
